The Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency (DVLA) requires HGV Drivers to be in reasonably good health in order to legally operate commercial vehicles on public roads.
To complete a HGV medical or PCV medical in Newark you will need to be assessed by a doctor who will verify that you are fit to drive this type of vehicle.

There are many hoops to jump through when it comes to getting or renewing your HGV Drivers licence. Arguably the biggest hurdle among aspiring or experienced commercial Drivers hoping to secure or renew their licence is the HGV medical exam.
What does a Driver Medical Involve?
The examination will only take around 15-30 minutes. It includes an eye test, Blood pressure check, physical examination and BMI Check. You will be asked questions about the following topics:
- cardiovascular system including high Blood pressure.
- endocrine system such as diabetes
- musculoskeletal such as back pain
- neurological such as stroke
- psychiatric such as depression.
- Alcohol and drug history
You will be interviewed by the Doctor, and have the opportunity to discuss any existing medical conditions that may interfere with safe driving. Your medical history will also be discussed.
How often do I need a D4 Driver Medical Test?
D4 drivers must have medicals as follows:
- At first application of your provisional Category C1 (7.5t), C (rigid) or D1 (minibus), D (bus) licence.
- When you turn 45 you will need to do another medical followed by one every 5 years after that until aged 65.
- When you turn 65 you will need a medical every year

Check List Of What To Bring
- Photo ID eg Passport or Driving Licence.
- The appropriate paperwork. We have a copy of some forms on the useful links page
- Details of any hospital doctors you may be under.
- Details of your GP.
- List of any medication you are on.
- Be prepared to give a urine sample.
- Bring any glasses you wear and be prepared to remove contact lenses
- Bring in your last opticians eye test form (within last 2 years). You can ring opticians and ask them to send you a copy or send it direct to us via our email.
- Cash Payment.
- Please arrive on time, or let us know if you are running late.
- On arrival you will need to show us identification. We will get you to fill in a small form so that we can obtain details about you so and are able to start a computer record. This is totally confidential and allows us to look up your details if you enquire again.
- Please be prepared to give a urine sample. Please DO NOT bring one with you.
- The doctor will see you followed by the nurse if needed.
- All medical forms or certificates will be signed on the day. However if blood tests are needed than we can only complete the forms after the results arrive. This can be around a week.
- On leaving you will be asked to pay for the medical unless prior arrangements have been made with your company.
- May need to bring in a medical summary in the case of Taxi medicals.
- We do not take credit/debit cards.
